Not your kid's princess: Disney icons get designer makeover

Harrods

Sure you wanna sleep in that, Aurora? It's probably a fortune to dry clean. Disney characters get a designer makeover for a new Harrods holiday window display.

All those poufy sleeves and cartoon-colored frocks? Not for today’s princess.

For a new Harrods holiday window project, Disney collaborated with the high-end U.K retailer to re-imagine their beloved royalty’s wardrobe, with the help of 10 famous designers.

Gone is Aurora’s simple gown and in its place is a dramatic, embellished ruffle creation by Elie Saab, along with a sultry Pocahontas in sexy Roberto Cavalli, Jasmine in floaty chiffon by Escada, and a dolled-up Ariel (wearing what I hope is waterproof eyeliner) in celebrity-favorite Marchesa. As for accessories? You can bet Cinderella ain't dancing at the ball unless she’s rocking some glass slippers emblazoned with the iconic Versace Medusa motif.

Tiana from 'The Princess and the Frog' is dressed in a mint-colored gown featuring a mesh overlay and scattered crystals by Ralph & Russo.

Nearly all of the most famous Disney heroines – Ariel, Aurora, Belle, Cinderella, Jasmine, Mulan, Pocahontas, Rapunzel, Snow White and Tiana – got the designer treatment. Their princes? They weren’t as lucky.

Jasmine from 'Aladdin' looks awfully pensive in a silk chiffon gown by Escada.

Top fashion designers offered their sketches interpreting Disney characters' outfits: Rapunzel from Tangled by Jenny Packham and Jasmine from Aladdin by Escada.

These extravagant fairytale-inspired outfits will adorn Harrods' festive windows at their legendary Knightsbridge store on Nov. 1. Watch a video of your cartoon favorites brought to stylish life:
