Hayden Panettiere, Julianne Hough, Nicole Kidman and Heidi Klum shimmer in aqua hues at the 64th Primetime Emmy Awards in Los Angeles on Sept. 23.

The sea was calling on the Emmy Awards red carpet.

Blues, greens and shimmering seafoam shades dominated celebrities' fashion choices, with everyone from Nicole Kidman (in Antonio Berardi) to Hayden Panettiere (in Marchesa) channeling the aquatic trend on Sunday night.

Under the sea: "Modern Family" star Sofia Vergara dazzles in a Zuhair Murad mermaid-like gown.

Of course, the leading sea siren was none other than “Modern Family” star Sofia Vergara, who wore a sexy, beaded mermaid-esque turquoise gown by Lebanese designer Zuhair Murad. To top it off, she wore some serious bling — a huge engagement ring — courtesy of her fiancé, Nick Loeb.

Actress Zooey Deschanel wore a sweet, retro-inspired pale blue gown by Reem Acra.

While blue was big (literally: see Zooey Deschanel’s poofy Reem Acra dress), other colorful hues were quite apparent. Did you think Pantone’s color of the year was just a summer fad? Tangerine still had a presence on the red carpet, as displayed on Ginnifer Goodwin and Padma Lakshmi, both dressed in Monique Lhuillier.

Julianne Moore, Julie Bowen, Hannah Simone and a pregnant Claire Danes glow in yellow.

And bright canary yellow made its way unto Claire Danes (in Lanvin), Julianne Moore (in Christian Dior) and “Modern Family” actress Julie Bowen, who chose a Monique Lhuillier gown that accentuated her curves.

"[I picked this dress] because it made me look like Sofia Vergara's distant, distant cousin," Bowen told E! News. (We don’t blame ya.)

Actresses Edie Falco, Melissa McCarthy, Amy Poehler and E! host Guilana Rancic look chic in black at the Emmy Awards.

But color sure had some competition from sturdy black, the wardrobe staple favored by Edie Falco (in Stella McCartney) and January Jones, who opted for a bold, goth-like look by Zac Posen that was somewhat reminiscent of Gwyneth Paltrow at the 2002 Oscars (which earned Gwyneth a spot in the NY Daily News Fashion Hall of Shame).
